Megan Dalen - Music Educator

Megan Dalen is a dedicated music educator specializing in voice, general musicianship, and music theory. She holds a Research Master’s in Musicology from Utrecht University and a Bachelor’s in Music Education from the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at Cal State Long Beach. With extensive experience working with students of all ages and skill levels, Megan thrives in both individual and group teaching environments.

Her formal music education began at Riverside City College in California, where she performed with the RCC Chamber Choir and Vocal Jazz Ensemble. Touring across the United States, Europe, and Russia with the RCC Chamber Singers, Megan developed a deep appreciation for the sense of community that music fosters.

At the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music, Megan continued cultivating this community among musicians and educators, serving as President of the American Choral Directors Association Student Chapter. In this role, she organized workshops and concerts, creating opportunities for fellow students to deepen their musical and pedagogical skills.

Eager to expand her understanding of music education and choral studies, Megan pursued her graduate degree at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. Her research focused on the intersection of music and cultural identity, culminating in her thesis: “Performing the Imagined European Identity at Europa Cantat.” This study explored how international choral festivals contribute to a shared sense of belonging within the European Union.

Beyond academia, Megan has extensive hands-on teaching experience. She has worked as a freelance music educator, teaching private and group lessons in voice, piano, and music theory to students of all ages, from beginners to conservatory-level musicians. As a zangdocent at Vocal Factory, she provides structured vocal instruction, tracks student progress, and adapts lessons to meet individual needs.

Megan’s leadership extends beyond the classroom. She contributed to ZIMIHC’s Leading Voices Festival and the Europa Cantat YEMP Programme, assisting with event schedules, facilitating communication between international musicians, and supporting the management of large-scale choral initiatives. These experiences have strengthened her skills in program coordination, community engagement, and fostering collaborative learning environments.

After earning her master’s degree, Megan chose to remain in the Netherlands, where she currently teaches voice and choral studies. She has attained a C1 level in Dutch and offers lessons in both English and Dutch. Beyond private instruction, Megan is passionate about making music education accessible by developing online learning resources that allow students to engage with music theory and musicianship at their own pace.

With a commitment to fostering both excellence and inclusivity in music education, Megan strives to inspire her students to develop their skills, confidence, and love for music—wherever they are in their musical journey.
